Crown Prince Haakon of Norway



Crown Prince Haakon of Norway was born in Oslo on 20th July 1973 to King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway. His full name is Haakon Magnus. When he was born Haakon was 2nd in line to the throne as his grandfather King Olav V was still reigning. Haakon grew up with his older sister Princess Martha Louise (1971). In 1991 his grandfather passed away and his father became King, and the age of 18 Haakon became Crown Prince of Norway.

Crown Prince Haakon served in the Royal Norwegian Navy and attended the Norwegian Naval Academy. The Crown Prince spent time aboard missile torpedo boats before attending university. Haakon studied Political Science at the University of California and graduated in 1999. He then attended the London School of Economics and completed a Master of Science in 2003.

In 2001 Crown Prince Haakon made a revolutionary move amongst all royals by marrying not just a divorcee, but one with a child. Haakon married Mette-Marit on 25th August and became a stepfather to her four year old son Marius (13th January 1997). They have two children together, Princess Ingrid Alexandra (21st January 2004) and Prince Sverre Magnus (3rd December 2005).

Crown Prince Haakon often acts as regent for his father whilst The King is away. As the Crown Prince he has many royal duties and holds audiences with politicians and attends privy council meetings. The Prince has an interest in cultural events and is a patron of twelve different organisations.

On the personal side The Crown Prince is a lover of sports in particular wind surfing and also enjoys singing.
