Prince Moulay Hicham of Morocco


Prince Moulay Hicham of Morocco is the first cousin of current monarch, King Mohammed VI. He was born on March 4th 1964 in Rabat, Morocco to Prince Moulay Abdallah & Princess Lalla Lamia. Hicham was born 3 years after the death of his grandfather, King Mohammed V of Morocco. When he was born he was 3rd in line to the Moroccan throne after his cousin and father. In 1970 he moved to fourth place due to birth of his other cousin Prince Moulay Rachid. Hicham remained 4th in line to the throne until his father passed away in 1983, when he once again became 3rd in line. Upon the death of his uncle King Hassan II in 1999 Prince Hicham became 2nd in line. After the births of his cousins' children in 2010 and 2016 Prince Moulay Hicham is currently 4th in line.

Prince Moulay Hicham grew up with his two younger siblings, Princess Lalla Zineb and Prince Moulay Ismail (1981). Hicham attended the Rabat American School and graduated from Princeton University in New Jersey. He undertook his post graduate studies at Stanford University in California.

Prince Hicham is known to have progressive political positions. He strongly believes in more democracy in Morocco. Prince Hicham speaks at universities around the world, and has written many papers on political reform in the Middle East. He is the founder of the Moulay Hicham Foundation which supports research into the Social Science of the Arab World. Hicham is the director of a renewable energy firm in Abu Dhabi and is on the board of Human Rights Watch.

In 1995 he married Malika. They have two daughters together, Princess Faizah (1996) and Princess Haajar (1999). The family live in Stanford, California where Prince Moulay Hicham is a Professor in the Centre for Democracy, Development and Rule of Law.
