The 2016 Olympics are just around the corner. Literally! They start in a week and a half. People from all over the world will be heading to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Royals are no exception. Here's the list of confirmed royal attendees though I'm sure others will go.
The United Kingdom
Princess Anne, The Princess Royal. The princess will attend in her position not only as a senior royal of The United Kingdom but in her role as a member of the International Olympic Committee. Princess Anne will be at the Opening Ceremony on August 5th and there for the entirety of the games until August 12th. In my opinion I think we will see much more than Princess Anne. I think Prince Harry will make an appearance and possibly Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. I would not be surprised if Zara Phillips attends with husband Mike Tindall. I'm also hoping for an appearance by Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and Sophie, Countess of Wessex and maybe even Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge. I'd like to see Peter and Autumn Phillips in the crowd as well. There is always a chance of more minor royals attending as well.
Belgium
King Philippe and Queen Mathilde will be there from the 4th to 8th of August in support of the Belgian athletes. It is unclear whether their four children; Elisabeth, Gabriel, Emmanuel and Eleonore will accompany them. I would not be surprised if we saw Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz in attendance as well.
The Netherlands
King Willem-Alexander will be in attendance from the 4th-6th. It is unknown if Queen Maxima will be joining him. It is very likely that his girls Catherine-Amalia, Alexia and Ariane will be seen with him.
Sweden
King Carl Gustaf XVI and his wife Queen Silvia will be in Rio from 16th August-21st August. Most likely his children will not attend. Princess Victoria and Prince Carl Phillip both have new babies at home and Princess Madeleine has two toddlers as well.
Monaco
Prince Albert II will be in Brazil for a whopping 10 days. Princess Charlene and the children Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella will not be attending. My guess is Princess Caroline will go with her daughter Princess Alexandra and Charlotte Casiraghi and I believe Princess Stephanie will also attend. These are just my opinions though.
Denmark
A strong royal representation from the Danes. Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie will all be there. Joachim and Marie will be in Rio from 29th July-8th August. Princess Mary will be there from 31st July-6th August. Prince Frederik is a member of the IOC and will be in Brazil from 31st July-21st August. My guess is Frederik and Mary's kids will not be with them. I think Joachim and Marie will bring Joachim's older children, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix but that's just speculation.
Unconfirmed
There are countries who have unconfirmed royal attendance. I think we will see members of the Jordanian royal family, also the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. I wouldn't be surprised if Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan put in an appearance. I think Crown Prince Haakon of Norway may attend with or without Mette-Marit and maybe with his stepson Marius. I don't know about Luxembourg, but maybe we will see Hereditary Prince Guillaume and his wife Stephanie. I also believe we'll see members of the Spanish royal family, particularly Infanta Elena and her children. I also think we'll see members of the former Greek Royal family.
Only time will tell who attends the greatest sporting event on earth. I look forward to watching the Olympics and seeing the royal faces.
