Spain

The Spanish monarchy has a turbulent past. In 1932 King Alfonso XIII went into exile as a result of the Spanish Civil war, and Spain now became a republic. In 1969 General Franco's hold on Spain began to decline and he declared Juan Carlos, the grandson of King Alfonso (Franco decided to skip over Alfonso's son due to political differences) as heir to the Spanish throne. Franco believed that the young prince would be able to continue the conservative, almost fascist style of regime. General Franco misjudged and Prince Juan Carlos began meeting with exiles and liberal reformers. In 1975 General Franco died and Juan Carlos became King Juan Carlos I of Spain. In 2014 Juan Carlos I abdicated and his son became King Felipe VI of Spain. Spain currently practices Male-Preference primogeniture. Though there are plans to change it to absoloute primogeniture the Spanish government deems it not urgent as currently the King has two daughters and no sons.
