Greece (Former Monarchy)

The Modern (former) Greek throne began in 1832, though the current family who hold the titles to the now defunct throne began their rule in 1863 when the former King was deposed. The first King, King George I of Greece is the ancestor of not only the Greek royals, but:

- The Grandfather of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (Husband of Queen Elizabeth II)

- He is the great grandfather of former Queen Sofia of Spain, and great great grandfather to her children, including King Felipe VI of Spain

- The Great Grandfather of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and his siblings Princess Alexandra, The Lady Ogilvy and Prince Michael of Kent (They are also 1st cousins to Queen Elizabeth)

- The Great Grandfather of Alexandra, former Queen of Yugoslavia

Whilst Greece has been a republic since 1973 (141 years after the first king) the former Greek royal family are very much in the limelight, especially since they are connected with other royal families. Constantine II the last King of Greece still uses his title as do his children, but it is not of course recognised in Greece. Though as they also descend from the Danish royal family their danish titles are recognised.

The line of succession to the former Greek throne goes like this:

Last Reigning Monarch: King Constantine II married to Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark

1). Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, Prince of Denmark married to Marie-Chantal (Son of King)

2). Prince Constantine-Alexos of Greece & Denmark (Grandson of King)
