Emperor Naruhito of Japan



Emperor Naruhito was born on 23rd February 1960 to the heir to the Chrysanthem (Japanese) throne Crown Prince Akihito and his wife Empress Michiko. Naruhito is the eldest of their two children and has one younger brother, Fumihito, Prince Akishino. He also has a younger sister, Sayako, the former Princess Nori. In 1989 when his father became emperor of Japan Naruhito became their heir apparent and Crown Prince.

As a child Naruhito was a fan of Basketball, History, Geography and the Violin. When he was fourteen the prince spent a year studying in Australia. For most of his education Prince Naruhito attended Gakushuin School. He continued his education at university and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in History. Naruhito also spent time at Oxford University in England. His time at Oxford University gave him an interest in Drama, Judo, Karate and Tennis.  When he returned to Japan he completed a Master's degree in History.

On 9th June 1993 Naruhito married Masako Owada. On December 1st 2001 the couple's daughter Aiko, Princess Toshi was born.

Naruhito has many official roles. Some of these revolve around his interest for water conservation, others are roles in traditional ceremonies. The prince is an honorary member of The Japanese Red Cross, a patron of the Japanese Olympic Committee and is heavily involved with the Japanese Scouts.

On April 30th 2019 Naruhito's father chose to abdicate due to his age and failing health. The next day on May 1st Naruhito had his enthronement ceremony and was crowned Emperor Naruhito of Japan.
