Crown Prince Fumihito is the heir to the Chrysanthemum throne. He is the middle child and younger son of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko. Fumihito was born on 30th November 1965. He has an older brother, Crown Prince Naruhito and a younger sister Sayako, the former Princess Nori.
Like his brother Fumihito did his schooling in Tokyo. After high school he studied law and biology. The prince spent time studying the taxonomy of fish in England. In 1996 Fumihito received his phD. Fumihito is a lover of tennis, calligraphy and The Beatles.
Upon the death of his grandfather Fumihito became 2nd in line to the throne. This position can only be changed by a male child of his older brother. As this is unlikely to happen Fumihito will remain 2nd in line. On 29th June 1990 Fumihito married Kiko Kawashima. Together they have 3 children. Princess Mako (23/4/1991), Princess Kako (29/12/1994) and Prince Hisahito (6/9/2006).
Fumihito works a lot with animal organisations and animal conservation. He is President of the World Wide Fund for Nature Japan and is a visiting professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture. The prince travels overseas and carries out a variety of public duties on behalf of the imperial family.
Upon his father's abdication on 30th April 2019 and his brother's enthronement ceremony Fumihito, Prince Akishino became the Crown Prince of Japan and heir to the Japanese throne.
