Crown Princess Kiko of Japan


Kiko, Princess Akishino is the wife of  the heir to the Chrysanthemum Throne, Fumihito, Prince Akishino. The Princess Akishino was born Kiko Kawashima on September 11th 1966. Her parents are Tatuhiko and Kazuyo Kawashima. When she was just a year old Kiko moved with her parents to Philadelphia, USA and lived there until she was five. Kiko's family then moved to Vienna where her father had a job in research. Here Kiko lived until the age of 16 and became fluent in English and German.The family returned to Japan in 1982. In 1989 Kiko completed university with a degree in psychology.

On 29th June 1990 Kiko married Fumihito, Prince Akishino and became Princess Akishino of Japan. The Prince and Princess Akishino have 3 children, Princess Mako (23/10/1991), Princes Kako (29/12/1994) and Prince Hisahito (6/9/2006).

Kiko, Princess Akishino accompanies her husband to many official events. The couple also travel extensively overseas as representatives of the imperial family. In her own merit The Princess Akishino is a patron of the anti-tuberculosis society. The princess has a phD in psychology and wrote a thesis on tuberculosis.

The Princess has a series of health issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome and osteoporosis which was made worse due to her having her son at a later stage in life. Kiko became Crown Princess of Japan on April 30th 2019 when Emperor Akihito abdicated and her brother-in-law Naruhito became the new emperor of Japan. At the same time Kiko's husband became, the emperor's brother, became Crown Prince of Japan.
