Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex
Prince Harry of Wales, Duke of Sussex is the younger son of Prince Charles of Wales and his first wife, Lady Diana Spencer. Harry was born as Prince Henry Charles Albert David in London on September 15th 1984. Harry is a grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and is currently 6th in line for the throne.
Prince Harry grew up alongside his older brother, Prince William (1982). Unlike his father who was home schooled until the age of 8 Harry began school at an early age. Prince Harry began his education at Jane Mynor's Nursery School in London, afterwards he attended Wetherby school. Harry then moved to Ludgrove School in Berkshire before finally attending boarding school at Eton College like his older brother. Harry and William's attendance at Eton broke the family tradition of sending their children to Gordonstoun School in Scotland. The month before he was due to start at Eton, a month shy of his thirteenth birthday Prince Harry lost his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales to a car crash in Paris. Harry excelled in Polo and Rugby during his years at Eton and graduated in 2003.
After school Harry spent his gap year working on a cattle station in Australia and spent time working with orphaned children in Lesotho. Prince Harry returned to the UK and in 2005 joined the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He completed his officer's training in 2006 he reached the level of Cornet and two years later became a lieutenant.
In 2007 Prince Harry was keen to serve in Iraq with his unit, but due to concerns about the safety of his fellow soldiers it wad decided Prince Harry would not go to Iraq. Instead Harry went to Canada in mid-2007 and began training with the Canadian Forces and British Army. In 2008 Harry saw active duty as he was secretly deployed to Afghanistan. He spent 10 weeks serving in Afghanistan where he helped repel attacks from the Taliban and undertook patrol duties. In recognition of his service Harry was awarded with an Operational Services Medal.
Upon his return from active duty Harry began training to fly military helicopters. The Prince earned his wings in 2010. In April 2011 after gaining a licence to fly Apache helicopters he reached the rank of Captain. In October 2011 Prince Harry was dispatched to an air force base in California where he underwent life fire training in preparation for another tour of Afghanistan. At the end of 2011 Harry returned to England before returning to Afghanistan for four months in September 2012.
In 2014 Harry completed his time with his regiment and took up a staff officer role. Prince Harry's time in the military influenced him to create the Invictus Games. The Invictus Games are paralympic game for men and women injured in the line of duties. The first games were held in 2014 in England. Prince Harry hosted the second games in Australia in 2018. Harry has a passion for serving wounded soldiers and pays regular visits to recovery centres and works alongside wounded soldiers.
In 2015 Harry spent four months with the Australian Defence Force and later that year chose to leave the army. After leaving the army Prince Harry continued to be heavily involved in the Invictus Games and working with wounded servicemen. In 2017 he became the Captain General of the Royal Marines. In 2018 he reached the rank of lieutenant commander in the Navy and a squadron commander in the air force.
Prince Harry became a counsellor of state in 2005. In 2006 Harry returned to Lesotho to visit a children's home and work with children orphaned due to AIDS. The Duke of Sussex regularly plays in charity polo matches and works with children encouraging them to play Rugby Union. As part of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, Prince Harry visited Belize, Bahamas and Jamaica. That same year he made an official visit to Brazil.
In his work with injured soldiers Harry traveled to the USA in 2013. Later that same year he made his first official visit to Australia. 2014 saw Prince Harry visit Italy and Estonia, whilst in November he opened the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey. In 2015 Harry made another trip to Lesotho to open a children's centre, and also made a visit to South Africa. In 2016 The Prince went to Nepal to help rebuild a school and went to South Africa to attend a conference and raise awareness about AIDS.
On a personal note Prince Harry enjoys many sports such as skiing, polo, motorcross, soccer and rugby. During his youth Harry was the subject of many tabloid reports due to his exploits such as dressing up as a Nazi and being naked in Las Vegas. His love life also came under much scrutiny, particularly his relationships with Cressida Bonas and Chelsy Davy.
On November 27th 2017 Prince Harry announced his engagement to the American actress Meghan Markle. The couple married on May 19th 2018. Harry and Meghan became the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. On May 6th 2019 Harry and Meghan welcomed their first child, a boy, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
