Sarah, Duchess of York
Sarah Ferguson was the wife of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Sarah Margaret Ferguson was born on October 14th 1959 in London to Major Ronald Ferguson and his wife Susan (Wright). Unfortunately Sarah's parents divorced in 1974 when she was 15 years old. A year later her mother married Hector Barrantes and moved to Argentina. The teenage Sarah stayed with her father who also remarried to Susan Deptford in 1976. Through her father's remarriage Sarah gained three half siblings; Andrew, Alice and Elizabeth.
Sarah began her education at Daneshill school before moving to Hurst Lodge School in Ascot. Sarah took a particular interest in swimming and tennis. Sarah Ferguson attended finishing school at Queen's Secretarial School before gaining a job at an art gallery. Following this the future Duchess of York worked at two public relations firms in London and then at a publishing company.
Sarah met Queen Elizabeth's second son, Prince Andrew and they got engaged on March 19th 1986. The couple married on July 23rd that same year. Their wedding party included Andrew's brother Prince Edward as best man, amongst the page boys were Sarah's 8 year old half brother Andrew Ferguson, Prince Charles' eldest son and Prince Andrew's nephew Prince William who was 4 years old and Princess Anne's son, also a nephew to Prince Andrew, Peter Phillips aged 8. Included in the brides maids were Princess Anne's daughter and Andrew's niece, Zara Phillips aged 5, Sarah's younger half sister Alice Ferguson who was six years old as well as Laura Fellowes the niece of Diana, Princess of Wales via her sister Jane. Upon the marriage Sarah became the new Duchess of York. Andrew and Sarah have two daughters together; Princess Beatrice of York (8th August 1988) and Princess Eugenie of York (23rd March 1990).
During her time as Duchess, Sarah made several overseas trips both with and without Prince Andrew. The Duchess traveled to countries such as Australia, Canada, Poland and the USA. Unfortunately the seemingly happy marriage of The Duke and Duchess of York was strained due to Andrew's many deployments as a naval officer. The couple officially separated in 1996. The couple have remained close throughout the years despite the divorce and a have a good relationship.
Since the divorce Sarah has been involved with many projects such as advertisements for weight watchers. She has also gotten into financial trouble, attempting to sell her connections to the Royal Family for money. The Duke of York has helped her out of many sticky situations.
Sarah continues to work with many charities and organisations which she began doing in the days of her marriage. The Duchess is heavily involved with the Teenage Cancer Trust and regularly participates in the openings of their units. In 1993 she founded Children in Crisis focusing on education and grand making to international programs. Sarah is heavily invested in the issue of women's health and often speaks about it or writes articles on the topic. Other ventures include the writing of the popular children's books 'Budgie the Little Helicopter' series.
