Wedding Wednesday (Princess Elizabeth of The United Kingdom and Prince Philip of Greece & Denmark)

There hasn't been a Wedding Wednesday for ages, so let's get right back into it. This Wedding Wednesday will look at the 1947 wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The couple celebrated a whopping 69 years of marriage last week on the 20th of November.

The actual marriage was fairly courtship, born in Greece and raised in France and Germany until the age of thirteen he was considered a foreigner. It didn't help matters that Philip's sisters had married Nazis and all lived and were raising their families in Germany. In the end the young Princess Elizabeth won her battle and married the man she loved, not without conditions. None of Philip's sisters were allowed to attend the wedding due to their German backgrounds. As he was joining the British Royal Family, Philip also had to renounce his titles of Prince of Greece and Denmark.

It was all worth it though as Philip and Elizabeth have a strong relationship filled with a mutual respect. They have a beautiful family which is constantly growing. Today they have four children; Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. They share 8 grandchildren; Peter and Zara Phillips (Anne), Prince William and Prince Harry (Charles), Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie (Andrew)  & Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn (Edward). They have also been blessed to see five great grandchildren Savannah & Isla Phillips (Peter & Autumn), Prince George & Princess Charlotte (William & Kate) and Mia Tindall (Zara & Mike)

Elizabeth and Philip's wedding day brought together most of British Royalty as well as those from around the world. Many of the senior royals today were just teenagers at the time.

Elizabeth's dress was fairly simple and the material had to be bought with ration cards as they were still using them in Britain at the time. Elizabeth did her own make-up and looked beautiful. Her tiara was the drama of the day. The 21 year old heiress chose to wear The Queen Mary Fringe Tiara. It dates back to 1919 (not so old) and was owned by Elizabeth's grandmother, Queen Mary. The morning of the wedding the tiara snapped and the royal jeweller was rushed in to fix it. Luckily it was repaired in time.

Now let's take a walk back in time to 1947 and see what was then the biggest wedding of the century.

Wedding Wednesday (Frederik & Mary Part 1)

Next Saturday will be the 12th wedding anniversary of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark & Australian born Crown Princess Mary (formerly Mary Donaldson). In celebration of this I am dedicating this week's Wedding Wednesday to the fairy tale couple

The evening before the wedding a gala performance was held at the royal theatre in Copenhagen in honour of the Bride & Groom to be. All the royals stepped out in gowns & tiaras.

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. The Queen is wearing the Pearl Poire Tiara. It is the 2nd oldest tiara in the Danish collection & owned by the country of Denmark rather than any one royal.

Mary Donaldson, the bride to be. Mary is wearing the Ruby Parure Tiara. The tiara was last owned by Queen Ingrid & gifted to Mary on the eve of her wedding. The Ruby Parure is the oldest tiara in the Danish collection.

The former wife of Prince Joachim, Princess Alexandra. She is wearing the Alexandrine Drop Tiara. Upon her marriage to Joachim Margrethe gifted this tiara to Alexandra, but they got a divorce. The tiara now belongs personally to Alexandra.

Queen Anne Marie & King Constantine of Greece. Anne Marie is Frederik's aunt

Frederik's cousins Crown Prince Pavlos & Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece. Marie-Chantal is wearing what I call the Marie Chantal fringe tiara. It is owned by Marie-Chantal herself.

Jane Stephens, Mary's sister and her three daughters

Prince Philippe, Duke of Brabant & Princess Mathilde. Mathilde is wearing the the Laurel Wreath tiara. This is the 2nd oldest in the Belgian collection and belongs to Mathilde.

Princess Astrid of Belgium, Archduchess of Austria-Este & Prince Lorenz. It's not very clear but Astrid is wearing the Savoy-Aosta tiara. The Savoy-Aosta tiara actually belongs to Prince Lorenz's family rather than the Belgians.

Prince Felipe of Spain, Prince of Asturias & his then fiancee Letizia

Infanta Cristina of Spain & her husband Inaki Urdangarin.

Queen Sonja of Norway. Queen Sonja is wearing The Queen Josephine Diamond Tiara. The tiara is owned by King Harald V & is one of the oldest in the Norwegian collection

Crown Prince Haakon & Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway. Mette-Marit is wearing The Amethyst Necklace Tiara. The tiara belongs to Queen Sonja but she lends to both her daughter-in-law & daughter when need arises.

Princess Martha Louise of Norway & her husband Ari Behn. Martha Louise is wearing the King Olav gift tiara. She received it in 1989 on her 18th birthday from her grandfather King Olav V of Norway.

Grand Duke Henri & Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg. Maria Teresa is wearing The Chaumet Diamond Pearl Tiara.

Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan

Princess Caroline of Monaco & Hanover and her husband Prince Ernst August of Hanover. Princess Caroline is wearing The Hanoverian Floral Tiara. This tiara belongs to Caroline's husband The family of Hanover. The tiara will one day become the property of Caroline's younger daughter Princess Alexandra of Hanover.

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex & Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Sophie is wearing the Battenberg Button Tiara. This tiara does not belong to the Countess but to her father-in-law Prince Philip. The tiara was the property of his mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg.

I hope you all enjoyed!!!

Wedding Wednesday (Wills & Kate Part 2)

As promised here is the 2nd part of the Wedding series for Prince William of Wales, Duke of Cambridge & Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (better known as Wills & Kate). On Friday they will celebrate their 5th wedding anniversary. Let's celebrate with them

The Bride: Catherine Elizabeth Middleton. Kate's dress was a sensation. It looked fantastic on her, but it was also simple and beautiful. It wasn't lavish, it's a dress every bride could wear. She also didn't have a large bouquet, which meant we could actually see what she wore.

A close up of Kate's tiara. She wore the 1936 Cartier Halo Tiara. It's currently owned by Queen Elizabeth II and was lent to Kate for her wedding day. The piece was originally owned by Queen Elizabeth's mother, Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
